Subject : Focused inspection campaign (FIC) by Paris MoU on inspection of Fire Doors during annual inspection beginning from 1 st July 2024 and ending on 30 th September 2024.

1. A focused inspection campaign (FIC) on Fire doors has been initiated by the member Authorities of Paris Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control.

2. The inspection campaign will be held for three (3) months, from 1st July 2024 until 30th September 2024.

3. The purpose of the FIC is:

  • To create awareness among the ship’s crew and owners about the importance of fire doors; and 
  • To verify that the ship fire doors are maintained properly and complies with fire safety requirements under the relevant IMO instruments.

4. The following points are part of the scope of this FIC:

  • Verifying that fire door control panel indicators, if provided, are functional;
  • Testing a sample of fire doors for local and remotely controlled operation;
  • Checking if self-closing fire doors are improperly lashed in the open position; Checking that doors close and latch properly;
  • Checking that doors fitted in boundary bulkheads of machinery spaces of Category A are reasonably gastight and self-closing; 
  • Checking that fire doors have the appropriate fire resistance for the bulkhead in which they are fitted – Class A or B.

5. Deficiencies found during the inspection will be recorded by the PSC officer and actions may vary from recording a deficiency and instructing the master to rectify it within a certain period of time, to detaining the ship until serious deficiencies have been rectified.

6. Accordingly, Owners and managers of the Shipping Companies are advised that the ship’s Masters are communicated on above mentioned FIC to ensure that fire doors are maintained properly onboard and comply with the relevant requirements.
