The objective of FIREPROOF was the development of a comprehensive risk-based framework for the quantification of fire safety of passenger ships with novel and existing arrangements.
FIREPROOF was co-funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission and the industry. Its consortium is comprised of thirteen partners, both from industry and academia, from UK, France, Norway, Germany, Greece, Portugal, India and USA.
The project commenced in 2009 and was completed in October 2012.
IRS was the only Asian participant in the FIREPROOF project. IRS assisted in developing fire scenarios according to their probabilities of occurrence, and also by performing fire simulations.
It is expected that using FIREPROOF methodology combined with step changes that have taken place in training and procedures, progress in technology of materials and detection / suppression equipment, will reduce substantially the fire risk onboard passenger ships and will help the rapidly evolving passenger ship industry to sustain high safety levels for the years to come.
