  1. Maritime security situation off the West Coast of Africa is complex and dynamic.

  2. Shipping industry associations and maritime organizations have published in March 2020 Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Security off the Coast of West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea (BMP West Africa), to help ships and seafarers avoid becoming the victims of maritime security incidents in these waters.

  3. This publication aims to help ships operating off the coast of West Africa to plan their voyage and to detect, avoid, deter and report attacks.

  4. With the publication of subject BMP, the shipping industry’s BMP series now includes three publications: 

    • Global BMPs - Global Counter Piracy Guidance for Companies, Masters and Seafarers 

    • BMP5 - Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Safety in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea 

    • BMP West Africa - Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Security off the Coast of West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea 

  5. Companies are requested to be guided by subject BMP.
